Weight loss solutions for your dog?
my dog is overweight what should i do?1) you can buy the science diet light food.. its awesome i used it on my dog and its incredible he is back to the way he was.. just read the little instruction thingy printed on the bag
2) read the feeding guidelines on the bag of kibble to figure out how much he should be eating for his size.. feed 1/3 less than that. exercize him more no more treats.. you can offer green beans and carrot sticks for a treat tho.
3) we feed our dogs a half a cup twice a day
4) either buy special weight loss food, not bakers as it still contains quite alot of fat, or give less of the food you are providing your dog, also dont forget to exercise your dog often, for about 30 minutes twice a day
5) Decrease caloric intake and increase exercise You can decrease caloric exercise by buying a lower calorie food, reducing the amount of food that you feed, or replacing some of the food with a high bulk low calorie alternative such as canned pumpkin or green beans. You can increase exercise by walking your dog more, teaching your dog to play fetch with you, or getting a treadmill for your dog.
6) I believe in Science Diet. It cost more but is worth the extra money. Dogs love it! They eat less and poop less to. You can also substitute boiled chicken and rice mixture for fewer calories. They love it and it is good for them. I have had a lot of luck with this.
7) Get a GOOD healthy diet dog food, like Wellness WEight Management. My yellow Lab is always having weight battles and my vet wanted him on Science Diet Prescription Diet Food, NO WAY would I put him on that unless I wanted him sick. But Wellness Weight Management worked and then I switched to Wellness Core reduced fat. I also have him on an exercise program. He uses the tredmil, plays ball, wrestles with my other dogs and goes for two walks a day in the snow. Dogs are like us in that aspect. In order to lose weight they need to burn more than what they are taking in. For treats he gets carrots and on occassion broiled chicken. Low fat high protein.
8) Get your dog a special diet food and if you have cats around, make sure your dog does not eat them since they are high in fat. Get your dog to walk more to reduce the weight and play more, run around to burn calories.
9) First, check the protein content in your food, and make sure it isn't full of "fillers"- find a brand of food that has less protein. (Hint, take 100 and subtract the amount of moisture in the dog food, then divide that number by the number listed on the package of food, and that is the ACTUAL protein content- i.e. Holistic Select fish flavor, 10% moisture, 22% protein, so 100-10 =22/90= 24, so this actually has 24% protein)- If your dog is overweight, try lowering the amount of protein he's getting. Also, you can substitute a portion of his food with canned, unsalted green beans. If he gets 4 cups of food a day, I might sub 1 cup for beans, so he's getting 3 cups of food and 1 cup of beans. Some folks use can pumpkin which has the same effect, but has an unsavory effect on the waste left in your yard! (YUCK!) If you know anyone who has done the weight watcher's points system, you'll find that Green Beans have zero point value, which makes them a great filler. Make sure you are feeding at least 2 meals a day, but for weight loss, 3 would be even better- they have time to work off smaller chunks of calories at a time. (weight loss hint- this works for humans, as well!)- You might also get a good vet check, make sure your dog doesn't have any health issues that would contribute to excess weight (like a thyroid condition)- That, and a good amount of exercise! And, good luck- I see waaaay too many overweight dogs, and it's so much harder on their system than it is ours! Keep after it, and your dog will lose the weight.
